36 yrs old & off to Camp La Jolla Womans Fitness Camp..for 3 weeks....alone!

Its Saturday night. i just had an amazing day with my family. Went to see High School Musical at the OC performing arts center, went to the Melting Pot (fondue place) for dinner. While at dinner my 5 year old son lost his first tooth.

Here's a peek into my life right now. Hubby has been with same company for 10 years, waiting on offer for new job! (update 6/28) Hubby accepted the job offer yesterday, Big Blue IBM/Cognos ....Congratulations Bryan!

He took 3 weeks off to hang out with my son over the summer. He's going to visit his parents and great grandparents on a road trip with my son, and will also check in with some high school buddies.

Me, I'm off to Camp La Jolla http://www.camplajolla.com/ to spent 3 weeks with woman over 30 from all over the country. 4 activities a day, 1200 calaries a day, nutrition classes and food trigger conversation. I'm FIRED up and nervous however, THRILLED to have this opportunity.

My work has been amazing, understanding how important this is to me and my health, physically and mentally.

So with this, i'm off to pack, spend a little more quality time with my family.

stay tuned....

1 week down--2 to go

Friday. We went Kayaking in Mission Bay yesterday. I own a Kayak and it is one of my most favorite things to do. This Kayak trip was fun for so many reasons. I was in a group of about 20 woman, i'd say about 90% of them had never been in a kayak. They were nervous and unsure and all the way there I'm jumping around like a 12 year old saying "your gonna love it, your gonna love it!". We had a blast, the weather was perfect. We saw a seal, some beautiful birds, there was a huge, and I mean huge birds nest on top of one of the boats mast. I was proud of myself because I was in a tandem kayak with Lina my roommate and we rocked. Usually I'm with my hubby and I rely on him, this time she relied on me and we were a great team.

I was right, everyone LOVED it!

On our way there I REALLY has some flash backs. I went to SDSU for school and my husband and I lived in Pacific Beach (the town right next to where we went kayaking). While I was driving in this van full of woman, I had a big smile on my face. Thinking about living with my old roommates, graduating from college, my favorite restaurant losta past and the moonlight kayak trip Bryan and I took together for the first time back when we were 22-23 years old.

Fast forward, I am committed to taking our kayak out more and exercising with this big smile on my face.

Saturday (today).

Beach walk wasn't until 7:30 this morning whoo hoo, an hour more of sleep! We went to the beach at Torey Pines, it was gorgeous. We walked, then walked to lunch. Everyone else had activities from 10:30-noon...I had a massage at 11am. I did not realize I was sore until the masseuse started pushing and rubbing and tugging, ouch and ahh.

I am sore and I am really tired. The week of kickboxing, water aerobics, walking, rock climbing, tennis, kayaking, etc. finally caught up with me. I watch a movie on my laptop all afternoon, walked to dinner and thought i'd remotivate for tonight but I am still beat. Today and tomorrow will be mellow work out days so that the machine that is camp la jolla will start bright and early on Monday.

IF i get my first choice for my 4 exercise sessions next week, it will be Pilates, Zumba (dance moves from the salsa, meringue, reggae, etc ), Racquetball and Fitness Frenzy (strength training and cardio) my fingers are crossed.

There's a whole process, who would of known.

Truckin along here at camp. Sort of in a happy, exhausted daze. Today was 6:30am beach walk, strength training (weights and core exercises), kick boxing and water aerobics again. The schedule will change for next week. Tomorrow we are going kayaking so I'm pretty excited!

We had a speaker tonight, she was random and all over the place but did say some very interesting things. There are legitimate stages of change, 2 of them are pre contemplation and contemplation. Everyone in the room nods there heads as most of us have been contemplating doing something about our weight for so long. It's nice to have someone but a name on it and that we're not crazy. She was sharing with us that we are all Athletes, if we say we are. Although she was a bit over excited about this concept, parts of it rang true. If i stop thinking I'm not in shape and think "I'm getting in shape", I WILL get there. But if I state that I'm just out of shape, I'm sure to remain that way. I am hoping to change my perception of me when i leave. I do workout and I do eat well, that's just who I am.

Strange that the food here has not been an issue, actually it's been pretty good. Lunch I had this really strange, yet pretty delicious ground soy. Tortilia, rice, ground soy (looked like taco bell meat), lettuce, tomoato, etc) it was really good; shocked! Tonight we had cheese and spinach tortellini's with asparagus (and always salad available). I even figured out a way to have yummy coffee, half coffee, half vanilla soy milk and one splenda, its good. We even had whole fruit bars! It is HILARIOUS to see a group of adult woman get so excited about Popsicles.

No TV's here so i think i might pop in a movie for the first time. HOW great is that, i haven't watch ANY TV in 5 days and i only miss it a little.

This athlete is going to bed, night.

Day 3

I am so amazed at how much i am enjoying being "disconnected" technology wise. I have left my cell phone in my room everyday, only checking in 30 min. during the day and when i arrive back at night. I truly feel "free". i have not met anyone who works on a computer everyday and when i was one of the few signing up (and excited) to get Internet access it really made me think i need to rethink how much time i spend on this thing.

NEW goal. Obviously for work i need to be on the computer and i still love my twitter/plurking, etc, but now i think it might need to be 2nd to a walk, a kick boxing class or a swim. It needs to take a back seat in my life.

I think everyone knows the magic word: balance. huh. amazing.

work, life balance = old term

technology balance might be my new goal

so i will celebrate today! walked to the beach about 2 miles, walked to all meals= 6 miles. Did kickboxing (awesome!), water aerobics (fun) and went rock climbing....had a blast!!!

I've had some great conversations and some out of control gigging fits with some of my new friends. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs to reclaim themselves.

tomorrow will be very similar. One new class will be behavior modification, I'm really excited to learn about this as I think it's at the root of my eating "issue".

Miss my boys so much (and my doggies too), but i know this is worth it

till tomorrow......

Nike Tennis Camp

I went to the Nike tennis camp this evening. I've never even held a tennis racquetand I really enjoyed it! (Bryan, we're heading to the tennis courts this summer to play around.) It was only an hour but I could see this being a fun way to run around to burn some calories.

I met more amazing people today, woman from austrailia, england, holland, florida, ohio, nevada, texas, north carolina, etc. Really nice to take a break from my little world and meet other people who are not very "connected". Teachers, Nutruitions, one lady even works in a nuclear plant! One common goal to get fit.

Camp is Fun. Night

2nd Day at Camp La Jolla

I arrived yesterday to the UCSD campus in beautiful La Jolla (San Diego), California. Weather is beautiful here. I Checked in, got my room key and was escorted to my dorm style room to unpack, "relax", and get situated. Then meet for orientation and off to dinner!

I have two roommates, Lina and Ashley..awesome ladies, I am thankful they will be my house mates for the next 3 weeks.

Went to orientation, rah rah rah, go ladies...seemed sorta silly until the woman who runs the camp started talking and i felt like she was talking to me, directly to ME. I quickly realized i was in a room full of woman just like me. Many like myself "know" what we should be doing, but we choose to take care of our children, husbands, work, etc more than we take care of ourselves.
Fired up we're off to dinner....but to get to dinner, we must walk a mile to where it will be served. It was a nice walk and most of all the woman I have meet have been lovely. Dinner was good and plenty filling. We then walked a mile back home to our dorms.

If you haven't figured this out yet, a mile to and from each meal x 3 meals a day...6 miles a day just to eat. On top of that we pick daily activities. For this week i have Water Aerobics, Tennis, Rock Climbing, Kick Boxing, Strength Training and Kayaking on TOP of the 6 mile walk at day. OH wait, i can also get up at 6am everyday for the beach walk (which i did today, go me).

So its day 2, I'm tired and fired up at the same time. But for now, gotta go put on my swimsuit, time for water aerobics!

Chow!
